Mentored Problem Solving Workshop – Las Vegas

March 23 - March 24

$95

MAXIMUM 4 PARTICIPANTS

Discounts for Canyoneering Karma Passport Holders

Join Rich either day or both days …

Do you want to gain more knowledge and competence with natural anchors, problem-solving, rigging and rescue systems? Here is your opportunity to hone your skills and learn tips and tricks from Rich’s 40+ years canyoneering.

Scenario Format

During each day you will be presented with a variety of “what if” scenarios to emphasize WHEN and WHY systems are sometimes appropriate and sometimes not. It is never enough to simply learn HOW to perform a task because the answer to the question, “Which way is the best?” almost always starts with, “It depends”.

Saturday Focus: Anchors

Topics may include:

  • avoiding the need for anchors
  • natural, transient and human anchors
  • using friction and sequencing to utilize marginal anchors
  • human anchor backups for marginal anchors
  • constructing and inspecting deadman and cairn anchors
  • knot chock and chockstone anchors

Sunday Focus: Rigging & Rescue

Topics may include:

  • belays, lowering and hand lines
  • static rigging vs releasable contingency rigging
  • single rope and twin rope systems
  • appropriate use of toggles and other ‘ghosting’ techniques
  • how rigging choices affect rescue options
  • simple lift and shift rescues
  • converting static rigging to lower

Gear Requirements:

  • harness
  • helmet
  • rappel/belay device
  • 5-6 locking carabiners, HMS (pear shape) preferred

If you have additional gear, feel free to bring it, but it is not necessary to purchase anything special for the course, other than what is listed above. Additional gear will be available for you to borrow, try and purchase during the course.

Fee: $195 per Day
